Cost & timeline planner
Pick your situation and see an itemized, dated estimate of what a California notary commission will cost you, and roughly how long each step takes. We sell none of these items, so the numbers are neutral. Official fees are exact; market items are honest ranges.
How much does it cost to become a notary in California in 2026?
The state charges a $20.00 application fee and a $40.00 exam fee. Everything else, the required course, the $15,000 bond premium, Live Scan fingerprinting, and a seal and journal, is market-priced, so most new notaries spend about $150 to $400 all in and take roughly six to ten weeks start to finish.
Plan your numbers
A planning estimate from public figures only. Official fees are set by the California Secretary of State and checked on 24 July 2026; market-priced items are typical California retail ranges, not quotes, and we sell none of them. Your actual prices will vary by vendor.
What goes into the cost
- Official state fees (exact). A $20.00 application fee and a $40.00 first-attempt exam fee, both set by the Secretary of State.
- The required course (market-priced). New applicants take a six-hour approved course; a renewing notary may take a three-hour refresher. Approved vendors set the price, and we do not sell it.
- The $15,000 bond (market-priced premium). The bond amount is set by statute at $15,000; the premium you actually pay for a four-year bond is separate and market-priced.
- Live Scan fingerprinting (market-priced). A background check through the California Department of Justice. The rolling fee is site-set; processing can take about four weeks, so start it early.
- Seal, journal, and optional E&O insurance. A sequential bound journal and an official seal are required equipment. Errors-and-omissions insurance is optional and not required by the state.
Why the timeline is weeks, not a weekend
After the course and the exam, results take 15 to 20 business days, and the separate Live Scan background check can take about four weeks. Once you are commissioned you file your oath of office and $15,000 bond with the county clerk within 30 calendar days. Most new applicants are realistically six to ten weeks from start to first notarization.
Cost and timeline, answered
How much does it really cost to become a notary in California?
The state charges only a $20.00 application fee and a $40.00 exam fee. The larger costs, the required course, the $15,000 bond premium, Live Scan fingerprinting, and your seal and journal, are market-priced on top, so most new notaries spend roughly $150 to $400 all in. This planner adds up the pieces you choose.
Is this planner free, and does it keep my information?
Yes, it is completely free with no signup and no ads. It runs in your browser; your selections stay on your device. When you calculate we receive only an anonymous, banded summary such as new-or-renewal and a cost range, with no identifier and no dollar amount. See our privacy policy.
Why are some costs shown as ranges instead of one number?
The application and exam fees are set by the state, so we show them exactly. The course, bond premium, Live Scan roll fee, insurance, seal, and journal are sold by private vendors at prices that vary, so we show honest ranges rather than invent a single figure we cannot promise. We sell none of these.
How long does the whole process take?
Budget several weeks. After the course and exam, results take 15 to 20 business days, and the separate Live Scan background check can take about four weeks, so most new applicants are looking at roughly six to ten weeks. The planner estimates a timeline for the path you pick.
