Is this the real California notary exam?
No. This is a free independent study aid, not the official test. The real exam is administered by CPS HR Consulting for the California Secretary of State (SOS); results arrive in 15 to 20 business days and are valid one year. Our questions are written from the 2026 California Notary Public Handbook to mirror what that exam covers.

How long is a California notary public commission valid before it must be renewed?

Do I still need the 6-hour course if I use this?
Yes. California requires a 6-hour Secretary of State approved education course before you can sit the exam (a 3-hour refresher is allowed for renewals). This practice exam is a free study aid, not a substitute for that required course, and we do not sell the course.
What score should I aim for?
Aim to answer at least 70 percent correctly here before you book the real exam. The official exam is scored by the Secretary of State's administrator; treat a comfortable margin above passing as your signal that you are ready.
Is my practice data private?
Your answers and running score stay in your own browser and are never sent anywhere. We receive only an anonymous, aggregate score band so we can see overall difficulty, never your responses, and there is no account and no identifier.
How current are the questions?
They are written from the 2026 California Notary Public Handbook and cite the underlying Government Code, Civil Code, and handbook sections. Every fact is re-checked against the official Secretary of State sources, with the last-verified date shown on the cost and guide pages.
